For the decades prior to ACTSA, we were the British Anti-Apartheid Movement (AAM) and it would be impossible to exceed the success of the Free Nelson Mandela Concerts – the first arose from Artists Against Apartheid leader, composer and musician, Jerry Dammers.

The first event was the Clapham Common Festival for Freedom in 1986, with 200,000 people attending. This opened the way for the groundbreaking Nelson at 70 tributes at Wembley Stadium in 1988, broadcast to 67 countries. Amazingly in April 1990, at the International Tribute for a free South Africa, Nelson Mandela, freed just two months before, was welcomed by a capacity audience, again at Wembley. On stage for 45 minutes, Mandela thanked over 600 million people around the world for their support.

New times bring new ideas, especially after the pandemic, so we’re delighted that ACTSA is the convenor of the new ‘Walk for Freedom’ regional event and the planned ‘CentrALL Festival’ in 2024.
