How + Where We Work
ACTSA is the successor organisation to the British Anti-Apartheid Movement. Created in 1994, we champion community action and solidarity in Southern Africa and the UK, to advance human rights in the region.
Our mission is to support civil society and activists in Southern Africa, so that the legacies of colonialism, racism and apartheid are replaced with justice and peace.
We work by:
Campaigning with people in Southern Africa and with people across the UK to influence change and support human rights in the region.
Sharing information and promoting learning about why the legacies of apartheid and colonialism still affect all of us today, and how everyone can be involved in making changes which advance human rights.
Connecting like-minded people to continue solidarity with civil society in the region, including through the arts, heritage and culture, fair trade and ethical business.
Supporting human rights activists in and from Southern Africa, amplifying their work for justice including policy changes which lead to equality and democracy, relieve poverty or promote public education and research.
ACTSA works with campaigners, activists and educationalists who care about the ongoing inequalities across Southern Africa. We raise awareness of the complex issues facing the region through campaigning and advocacy work, advancing education about the region and supporting partner projects which address the legacies of colonialism, neo-colonialism and apartheid.
An All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) is an interest group that occupies a strategic and effective position within Parliament. It is cross-party, with a minimum number of parliamentarians from the Government and the official opposition, and cross-house, comprised of peers and MPs. As cross-party groups, APPGs are an effective vehicle to effect meaningful change via the Parliamentary system. An APPG is bound by the rules set out by The Office of the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards. It does not have charitable status, or official status in the House, nor does Parliament fund it. It relies wholly on the participation and contribution of parliamentarians, industry members and stakeholders with an interest in South Africa. Action for Southern Africa (ACTSA) acts as the secretariat for the APPG-South Africa.
