“We must stand united and say that this will not be tolerated” ~ comment on Zanu-PF extending presidential term in Zimbabwe
20/10/2025
On 18 October 2025, Zimbabwe’s ruling ZANU-PF party decided to amend the constitution to extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s term by two years to 2030, a move opposition politicians have condemned as unlawful. This would prolong the 83-year-old president’s second five-year term, currently set to end in 2028.
ACTSA Advisory Council member Makomborero Haruzivishe comments:
“Emmerson Mnangagwa’s relentless pursuit of power threatens to resurrect the shadow of Robert Mugabe’s era, a time when one man clung to leadership without end, seeking to undermine the very foundation of the 2013 constitution. That document, born from the sacrifices of the liberation struggle of 1980 and the democratic aspirations ignited in 1999, stands as a testament to the will of the Zimbabwean people.
We must stand united and say, with unwavering resolve, that this cannot and will not be tolerated. The troubling fusion of party and state, where the government bends to the whims of Zanu-PF’s resolutions, demands that we act now to free Zimbabwe from the grip of Mnangagwa’s regime.
We have witnessed Zanu-PF’s dark history—violence against innocent citizens to seize power in elections, the plundering of our economy, as exposed by the so-called Gold Mafia, and now, an audacious attempt to rewrite the supreme law of our land for the benefit of a select few, while millions of Zimbabweans suffer. This is not who we are. We must protect the constitution, the heartbeat of our nation, and ensure it serves every Zimbabwean, not just the privileged few.
Together, we can and we will rise to meet this challenge.”
