New report: UNDENIABLE ANGLO AMERICAN’S ROLE IN THE KABWE SACRIFICE ZONE
22/09/2026
On Wednesday, 23 September 2026, Action for Southern Africa (ACTSA) launches UNDENIABLE: Anglo American’s role in the Kabwe sacrifice zone, a new report examining Anglo American’s historical role in the Broken Hill Mine in Kabwe and the enduring environmental and health consequences of lead contamination.
You can read or download the report here.

Researched and produced for ACTSA by historian and researcher Duncan Money, the report draws on previously unpublished company reports, correspondence, telegrams and other documents sourced in 2026 from the Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines (ZCCM) archive in Ndola.
The evidence presented challenges Anglo American’s current account of its involvement in Kabwe. The report examines the company’s control over the mine, including its role in appointing directors and senior staff, managing operations and overseeing the sale of metals. It also documents the environmental practices that contributed to widespread lead contamination and the long-term harm experienced by communities living around the former mine.
The report concludes by examining the question of responsibility for Kabwe’s ongoing public health and environmental crisis, and makes the case that Anglo American has a moral responsibility to contribute to resolving the legacy of mining in Kabwe.
