Dignity! Period.
In 2005, working with the women’s section of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions, ACTSA launched The ‘Dignity! Period’ campaign. Between 2004 and 2015 we provided over 7.5 million sanitary products to women and girls in Zimbabwe.
The Campaign
The protracted economic crisis in Zimbabwe in the 2000s had as one of its many impacts the lack of access to sanitary products for many women and girls, which affected their ability to participate in public life and education. In 2005 the women’s section of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions asked if ACTSA would work with them to supply sanitary products to women and girls, and The ‘Dignity! Period.’ campaign was launched.
Since then ACTSA helped provide over 7.5 million sanitary products to women and girls in Zimbabwe, partnering with Bodyform on their ‘You buy one we’ll donate one’ campaign in 2008, and also renewing the campaign in 2018.
As well as providing millions of products, ACTSA worked with women to engage community leaders and lobby for legislative changes that would make a material difference, such as reducing taxes on sanitary items.
ACTSA, led by women from southern Africa, is growing its work on inequalities faced by women and girls in the region and in the UK. Keep an eye out on our campaigns page.
