South Africa: Victims of the Sharpeville Massacre Remembered on Human Rights Day

On 21 March 1960, 69 black South Africans were killed by the apartheid South African police force when demonstrating, peacefully, against the pass laws in Sharpeville, South Africa.

It is now marked as Human Rights Day in South Africa with anti-apartheid activist Steve Biko being remembered at this year’s commemorations, 40 years after he was beaten to death by police at the age of 31.
