We were delighted to meet with some of ACTSA’s youth delegates at a special dinner in South Africa House, to review our plans for 2024 and reflect on the past 30 years of solidarity with the region.
Makomborero Haruzivishe brought us up to date on the dire situation for democracy in Zimbabwe. He said ‘this year citizens won’t see free and fair elections. I predict more repression and state violence, and more opposition MPs detained’.

Makomborero reflected ‘It is tragic that 43 years after independence, the divisions of race have been replaced with the divisions of politics, whereas the people of Southern Africa are one – that is pan-Africanism. At this particular time, we appreciate the commitment ACTSA has shown by standing again with the people of Zimbabwe we battle against division and corruption, and for the democracy our constitution promises’.
Get involved with our 2024 programme including the planned 2024 symposium, ‘Voices of the South’, featuring women influencing policy and practice in the region. We’ll also be spotlighting the right to a basic income as the only just way for people to be compensated for gender, climate and economic harms caused by legacies of colonialism and apartheid.
