It has high unemployment rates, significant poverty and gross inequality, nevertheless South Africa has the largest economy on the continent and probably the best infrastructure in sub-Saharan Africa. Its dominant political party, the African National Congress (ANC), is the oldest liberation movement in Africa and celebrated its centenary in 2012. Despite being a key political actor in the struggle and dismantling of apartheid, in recent years the ANC has been surrounded by corruption scandals. However with the recent election of a new president many are hopeful for change in the vibrant nation.
